Weight - silver ring
Made in Norway
The original was cast in lead. It is likely that it was produced in Kaupang since similar weights have also been found there. They were used with balance scales by merchants for weighing silver when trading, for paying fines, and for weighing metals for casting. The weight is 8 grams or 1 “ertog”, a unit of weight in the Viking age. Several others weights with the same cylindrical shape have been found in Kaupang, but few with decoration.
Cast on all sides directly from the original piece from the Viking Age. Includes adjustable size ring as shown.
Measures 3/8” in diameter
